Topmix permeable – Topmix permeable is a concrete which offers improved permeability properties over traditional solutions. Combining both the trafficking surface and the drainage solution simplifies the construction process and reduces costs. Topmix Permeable is a fast-draining concrete pavement solution that has been described as ‘thirsty concrete’ because of the rate it is able to absorb surface water. Traditional concrete must be permeable enough to allow water through to ground level at a minimum rate of 300 mm/hour. By contrast, Topmix Permeable is capable of letting through around 36,000 mm of water/hour. This innovative new material system, offers much potential for the design of sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS), in terms of being able to provide a practical answer to the perennial problems of surface water flooding. Whereas conventional concrete is sand-based, Topmix Permeable uses tiny pieces of crushed granite packed together. Known as ‘no-fines concrete’, this has a high void content of 20-35%, and allows surface water to drain through and dissipate naturally. This helps reduce the risk of surface water flooding and watercourse contamination. A typical system consists of a layer of Topmix Permeable installed on top of an aggregate sub-base, which is in turn laid onto undisturbed soil or a capping layer. The structure and dimensions of each layer will depend on the application and the design of the system.Unlike conventional concrete, it has a high void content of between 20–35%. This allows surface water to drain through into the sub-strata and dissipate naturally, reducing the risk of surface water flooding and watercourse contamination. | ||
